I always wondered what the problem with the Texas program was - having 15 bosses you have to answer to is probably a big part of it.

We also uncovered a nasty little racial component of what is going on when some showed their true, um, colors not long after announcing the hiring of Charlie Strong.

Politics and college football in Texas have been inseparable for generations. Read some of the old Southwest Conference stories to get an idea of just how much.

Part of it is a racial history at UT that has made it pretty damn hard to recruit in-state. I think it got better under Mack Brown but it still isn't good.

Wasn't the Governor one of the biggest SMU boosters involved in the Pony Express scandals of the '80s?

Bill Clements. Was president of the SMU board of governors then won an election for Governor.

One of the first and still one of the best of the 30-for-30s.
I knew someone who was on the infractions committee that administered the death penalty to SMU. There was one thing, he said, that made them certain they were doing the right thing in banning the program for a year: White boys on official visits were set up with hot SMU sorority girls. Black prospects were set up with DFW area hookers.

Sark will know his way around 6th Street. A match made in Milwaukee.

The black girls were smart enough to get paid.

Is the thinking that Sark's drinking was why he underacheived at Udub and USC and now that he's sober he'll be great? He probably would have been canned just based on the results he put up in Seattle - he was on the proverbial hot seat there. Going to be interesting who he gets for his staff.

I’m not sure he did underachieve at Washington. He took over trash and set it up well for Chris Petersen, whose best team came with many (not all) Sark recruits.

but how much better he is at Texas than Herman depends on getting a QB. Not a running back who can throw. A QB.

The best team money can buy.

They were, too. The Pony Express flat kicked ass.

He needs to hire a staff that is absolutely stiff with talented recruiters - and can also coach at a high level. That's a high bar to clear, but OTOH, if you're a good assistant the thought of being one of the guys who got UT over the top has to be very attractive.
