Yeah, the whole thing would be a disaster if each state got to choose. Nevermind states that go between two time zones.

Some good stuff here about anomalies in time zones. Arizona is even more F*ed up because of the Navajo/Hopi disaster when you throw in enclaves.

I recall reading an AP story about this many, many years ago, so it might have been sorted out by now, but the gist of it was that Indiana had six or seven different mini time zones. It stemmed from Indiana not changing to DST; parts of Indiana and Kentucky being in different time zones; some counties around major cities like Cincinnati, Louisville and Chicago adjusting their local times observing DST to stay on pace with the cities, since so many people commuted; and some other local variances. It sounded like a nightmare trying to keep up with it all.

I have to regularly travel between Eastern and Central time. It's nice traveling west because I pick up an hour. The return sucks because I lose one.

When the part of Florida that is on Central Time goes back to standard time and subtracts an hour (going from 2 a.m. to 1 a.m.), for the next hour it is on the same time as the eastern part of Oregon that is still on MDT until that time zone also turns its clocks back at 2 a.m. with the return to standard time. How crazy is that.

Solution: Move to Hawaii. One time zone, no daylight saving time.

    Also, no winter.

    Hmmm …

Or become like China: One time zone for the entire country.

    Lost in today's insurrection:

JUNEAU, Alaska -- The U.S. government held its first-ever oil and gas lease sale Wednesday for Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, an event critics labeled as a bust with major oil companies staying on the sidelines and a state corporation emerging as the main bidder.
The sale, held as scheduled after a judge Tuesday rejected requests by Indigenous and conservation groups to halt the event, garnered bids on half the 22 tracts that were listed as available in the refuge’s coastal plain. The U.S. Bureau of Land Management, which held the sale, said the bids were under review.

Lowered petroleum demand and no banks willing to fund projects there.

Probably also the feeling that the sale would be reversed in two weeks, so why bother? At best it's a waste of time. At worst it's throwing away millions of dollars.
