I will spend the rest of my life repairing the damage they did to my psyche. I’m still a Christian, but I wasted decades of my life trying to live up to their dour, severe standards, only to find out they never really aimed to hold themselves to that same standard. I’ve already promised myself once the pandemic has faded and in-person sessions are practical again that I will seek out counseling to help me through this. There are friends and family I deeply respected that I’ll never be able to look in the eye again after the Trump years.
