Years ago, there was a furniture store in Champaign that ran TV ads where "EVERYBODY GETS A FREE ONION!" if you bought a piece of furniture.

    DOWNER DOWNER DOWNER!

It even made it into The Simpsons, which I couldn't find. Here's one of the commercials:

When I was a kid in Atlanta there were the three major network stations and a couple of UHF stations. One was WTCG, which was bought by Ted Turner in the mid-70's and eventually became WTBS, later just TBS. The old pre-Turner WTCG was a low power, one lung station. One of the major advertisers was The Big Red Furniture Barn. They sold cheap furniture, running the cheesiest ads you ever saw. The guys who ran the place and were the TV spokesmen were a pair of middle-aged, overweight twins. These guys were often shown wearing overalls, and looked and sounded like they were straight off of Hee-Haw, starting before that show was on the air.

Anyhow their gimmick was "nine cents". Typical commercial would be something on the order of showing the two twins standing in front of a dining room set. "Mama got two for the price of one, and So Can You! Come to the Big Red Furniture Barn, buy this dining room set for $99, and we'll throw in this sofa and love seat for just nine cents, that's right, nine cents! Buy this child's bedroom set and we'll give you a pony!"

I looked on Youtube, but I guess no one thought that they were worthy of cultural preservation. Sooo bad, omg... and hilarious in my memory.

You must remember the Banana Splits (the channel 17 promos from "your old pal Drooper for Super 17"), and Bill Tush's "Early in the Morning" newscasts -- not to mention his sketch comedy show "Tush".

I have to dab my eyes now and then. Evokes strong memories of a grandma I loved very much.

Sure, although the Banana Splits were a little past my time. Tush I remember vividly, because you never knew what that guy was going to do on a late night news break. I remember watching him once doing news. He went to the commercial break, and when they came back he had a gorilla mask on. He just continued to do the news without any comment or acknowledging that anything was different. Cracked me up.

There's a pretty fun discussion of our favorite parts of these ads on the Commercials We Hate thread.

I'm not my parents. I have a mute button and I'm not afraid to use it.

I kinda like the little sound at the end of the jingle. It sounds like a thump.
