Remember, also, that it wasn't THAT great a pass (think back to the Justin Fields arguments ). Nobody was within 7 yards of Hill. He had to slow down, turn around and wait for the ball.

Mahomes is the real deal, but he's not exactly threading the needle on that play.

Hill was wide open because of the combination of the scheme and his speed. That is, the scheme is designed to use the safety's respect for Hill's speed against him. It also takes advantage of the fact that defenses don't expect the quarterback to be able to make that throw (because very few can).

Also, the line didn't hold up very well. Buckner was barely even slowed, much less blocked, though he was delayed slightly because he went outside on a stunt. One reason Mahomes was even able to get the ball away on a very slow-developing play is that he kept drifting back on an extra-deep drop to buy time (which also made the throw more difficult).

That was a fantastic play by Mahomes (and Hill, too).

 

Good thing he could afford to lose a few bucks.
