We've been kicking the can down the road for decades on the environment and debt. We did it with slavery, integration - and have decided to let the courts settle the really big issues.

Members of Congress, by and large, are no better nor worse than the voters who picked 'em. Tens of millions of Americans want to live in a fascist white supremacist state where their political opponents are executed or imprisoned. Putin, not Trump, is their dream date.

 

So when republicans are incensed that courts used technicalities like standing, laches and discretion to deny substantive review of alleged fraudulent voting in a presidential election, they didn’t mean it. Because they are using a technicality to avoid ruling on the substance of whether trump incited violence.

Someone made the point that a President could simply resign to avoid conviction. They can commit any crime and then just resign.
Also anyone can attempt to impeach past or future retired Presidents, they just need to prove they committed a crime.

Impeachment is used to get someone out of office. If they resign, the purpose is equitably fulfilled.
Invoking the 14th Amendment’s clause about denying insurrections the ability to hold office is separate from impeachment, or should be.
