I have often said Don Shula convinced me he was the greatest coach of all time by getting a team to the Super Bowl with David Woodley at quarterback.

Batman has a good point. You can look at this two ways. Do you base it on the entire careers of the quarterbacks or how they played in that game?

Super Bowl XL belongs on the list if you go with the latter. Roethlisberger played one of the worst games by a starting quarterback for the winning team in Super Bowl history, completing only nine of 21 passes for 123 yards, no touchdowns, and two interceptions. Matt Hasselbeck threw for 273 yards, but he needed 49 attempts to get there. He also threw a killer interception along with his lone touchdown, and his team managed only 10 points.

 

And in true Morrall SB fashion, the only Colt to throw a TD pass in the game was . . . John Unitas, who soon after left with injured ribs.

The Colts' kicker with the winning FG was dating coach Don McCafferty's daughter at the time. And the NFL Films video introduced me to Tchaikovsky's March Slave (20:06).

 

But he also only got one team to the Super Bowl with Dan Marino. That, the 1964 NFL championship blowout, and Super Bowl III diminish his legacy considerably.

 

And was, perhaps, one fourth-down stop away from winning it. People forget that the Redskins were losing halfway through the fourth quarter when Riggins turned into the original Beast Mode.
