Trump is the defendant in a trial. He can't be required to take the witness stand, and his lawyers would be way-past-Rudy levels of insane to let him.

 

Impeachment is not a criminal trial. In a civil case the plaintiff can depose and subpoena the defendant foe trial. The defendant can invoke the 5th in a civil case but the finder of fact can make rational inferences from the invocation. In fact the rules of evidence probably don’t even apply to a Senate impeachment trial. It’s not a kangaroo court but it’s close.
