I think we are underestimating the price the Rams had to pay for the Lions to take Goff and his contract.

I like the trade for both teams.

You can win a championship with Matthew Stafford...if the Ravens could win with Joe Flacco, the Rams can win with Matthew Stafford. The damn near almost won with Jared Goff so they got a major upgrade as a QB. He's still only 32 so they are probably looking at an extension at some point.

The Lions aren't good. They got wrecked mentally and organizationally by Matt Patricia and the shitty management that brought him in. They are hitting a total reset. Goff is still a young QB that might get better, I don't think he will, but they have three years of a bloated contract to find out and by next year or the year after they will have drafted their QB of the future if he doesn't turn things around.

The Rams are trying to win now in a win-now city and they got a better guy to pull the trigger. The Lions are on a 3-4-5 year plan and they have a lot of future draft capital for it. They will be picking at front and back of a couple of drafts and can build a roster.

I told my friend that the minute the Texans GM said Watson wasn't on the market, Detroit was the big winner because they had the top available QB on the market.

That is a fair point. You aren't alone in that thought,

After two years, the Lions can cut Goff for a zero cap hit?

If that’s true, this is a hell of a trade for the Lions.

I'm seeing different answers as I read about it. Maybe the cap hit was worse for the Rams than it would be for a team that took him in trade?

I too think it's a good trade for both teams - the Rams are all in for the next two or three years. The Lions are rebuilding = Goff is seriously overpaid for his production, but can be a bridge to the next QB, or possibly regain his form - McVay and Snead were smart to make the change though, otherwise people would be talking about what a whiff the Rams made with the top pick and a bigger whiff with the Goff contract. Or maybe he just needs a solid running game to be a good QB.
In any case, the ID'd who they wanted and got the guy.

I believe that is the case. I haven’t covered the league in years, but that’s the way it worked at the time.

Goff is so shitty that the Rams had to give 2 first round picks and a 3rd rounder to unload him.

1 and 3 sounds like the range of the offers that fell short, although the Lions reportedly asked for Lock from the Broncos
Holmes is the guy who pushed for Goff with the Rams
The Lions envision having a running game for the first time since Barry Sanders retired and Goff becoming the new Tannehill
I envision the Lions being the Lions
