The election piece is crucial. Assholes doing stuff in the name of a political candidate (or, as Bill Clinton once said, Rush Limbaugh) isn't necessarily much of a thing. But it coalesced around a specific fact that Trump played to the hilt, and Trump was the president when he played it up.

One more reminder: The intended audience for the defense is the defendant, nobody else. It's a show for him. They could have gotten up, said "the defense rests" and still know Trump would be acquitted.

No it's not. It's intended for Trump and if his racist fascist fans want to sing along, that's great. But it's not an argument designed to convince anybody, just to reinforce a narrative. It's the same thing we've seen for five years, people convinced that if they just do what Trump wants, he'll reward them, which seldom happens.
