That campus and alumni base has the most inexplicable combination of red-assed seriousness and devil-may-care attitude I’ve ever seen. It’s impossible to describe - you have to experience it for yourself. And the switch can be thrown in a fraction of a second.

Woman comes into the store looking for ski bibs and jackets. We are sold out. She begins griping about everybody buying up the ski gear just to play in the snow and now she can’t get any. The owner is standing there and asks why she needs it. “We are going to Montana to go skiing,” she said. The owner replied “Why should playing in the snow in Montana take precedence over playing in the snow right here in town?”

    She turned and left.

Sounds great. But I’ll be quite a bit north of wherever that is. If you want to meet on the Buffalo River, that might be another story.

    A pox on everybody involved:

    1) What kind of fool waits until the last day or two to buy ski gear for a ski trip?

    2) They've invented the internet and overnight shipping. I'm sure you can order anything you want and get it shipped in a day or two, as long as you're willing to pay through the ass.

    3) To the store owner standing there making snotty remarks, wasn't your first thought, "this dumb bunny will be back here next week wanting to buy this shit anyway" ?
    "Why does she need it?"
Who gives a shit, none of your fuckin business. Why do you think she needs it? Do you want to sell her the ski shit or not?
Hell, if you're any kind of retailer, you probably know how to get the shit anyway, for a suitably extravagant price for rush delivery. So let her pay it.

    4) I'm sure there are places to buy ski shit in Montana.

We got a pretty good ice storm here in Central Virginia over the weekend. Finally was able to get out and walk the neighborhood yesterday. We have a lot of huge, old trees, and one car just a block down the street from me just got annihilated. Back window blown out from a falling tree, huge dent in the right side of the car with the rearview mirror ripped off and a giant hole ripped in the hood. Hope they have good insurance. They're calling for another half inch of ice Thursday night/Friday morning now. A ton of people southwest of the city are still without power. A couple of counties were nearly 100 percent blacked out. Honestly, the most depressing winter I can remember in my 16 years back in Virginia. There is hope that we'll see some sun today for the first time since last Wednesday, so yay?
