In August, we had about 60m fewer infected people and, more importantly, we didn't have hundreds of millions of vaccines incoming in the next couple of months. Vaccines are such a great backstop. Even if you fuck it up, they bail you out over time.

I agree caution is warranted. "On pace to win" is not the same as "won."

That's what happens when you have a virus that has killed 250,000 Trumpists and 250,000 good people who were unfortunate enough to pass a maskless Trumpist on the sidewalk.

Obviously, it not a competition, that said, who do you think has it worse during this pandemic; people living alone or parents with kids?

    Those living alone.

Although I'm sure many of us -- myself included -- love having time to ourselves, and often, would actually prefer to be alone than to be with others, people are not made to always remain in isolation. That's why solitary confinement is considered a terrible punishment, even in prisons.

And despite the fact that it would, probability-speaking, be safer to be by yourself when it comes to the chances of exposure and spread of COVID-19, it would still be better to have some nearby support system and some possible direct human interaction in place -- no matter what does or does not happen.

Life can be very lonely for many, even under the best/most normal of circumstances. COVID-19 only makes such a condition worse.

This is what the big picture looks like IMO. It's not that I don't appreciate RickStain's optimism, but this isn't going to magically disappear. And acting as if improved numbers over this short a period of time allows us to declare that it's over will simply kill a lot more people much more quickly. We've been sucked into this line of thinking before ... and look what happened.

    Optimism over better numbers? Sure.

But journey of 1,000 miles ... and these are merely steps. Not the finish line.
