Because leaking this by Charlotte is a preemptive bid to scare off other Watson suitors by establishing a base price that's hard to match, let alone top.

I guess they can tell him he has to go to Charlotte, but we'll see if that's the case.

I don't think Charlotte is the radioactive situation that Houston seems to be right now. Like even Watson saying he would go to the Jets, I took less as a "I want to be in a big market" thing vs. "I recognize they have the assets to actually acquire me."

He's got a no-trade clause in his contract. He has to sign off on any trade.

Then my earlier point stands. If the only options are Charlotte or Houston, sure, he'll choose Charlotte. But if they completely gut their future trying to land him, why would he want to join them over other potential options?

They offered No 8, Teddy and a pick for Stafford but he didn’t want to go there

I think the answer is, because there's no guarantee he'll have other options.

He's entirely at the mercy of where Houston finds a deal. It's not like they'll work out trades with Carolina and Miami and then ask him to pick. In reality they'll ask him about trade number one and he can say yes or no, but if he's holding out for a specific place that trade may never come. (And if Miami is willing to give up that much after just landing Tua, they must think Tua is absolutely beyond redemption.)

You would think that Tua would have some trade value, though. Someone will think he's *not* beyond redemption.

There would be some trade value, and there are some very dumb GMs out there.

But after Miami's whole "tank for Tua" thing... to pull the plug and give up a fortune to get Watson? They would have to think Tua is pretty hopeless.

Not necessarily. Watson is proven. Tua is not.

No fingers in the chili is a nice bonus ...

John McKay would probably be in favor of it.
