Why are private, for-profit companies owning utilities in the first place? We don’t have private police or fire departments. Our sewer system isn’t privately owned. Even our garbage collection is done by the city.

 

We have a half-dozen private garbage companies patrolling our neighborhood. Each on a different day of the week.

We're about three millimeters outside the city limit, so we never see the city garbage trucks. Have to pay a $75 annual fee to use the city's fire department (but get to avoid a handful of city taxes).

Our electric is served by a cooperative. Neighborhood street maintenance is an ongoing battle between our HOA and the city. Three years ago they did what I thought was going to be a long-overdue resurfacing, but it was just an ugly patching.

 

Our garbage/recycling through the city but there seems to be a few private collection companies in the surrounding counties. Electric is private through Dominion Energy.

 

Expect this to become a campaign issue in the primary.

It's only a month in - but I was expecting to see more of Harris as the VP. Figured the West Wing would be like Biden hanging back in DC, while Harris did all of the travel not related to comforting disaster victims. Though COVID-19 probably has a lot to do with that.
