Paul Harvey, I think, was supposed to be a throwback to the great radio voices of the 30s and 40s, who also wove commercial pitches into their folksy commentary. As did liberal darling Garrison Keillor in the 80s/90s. It wasn't really that objectionable as long as you realized that's what he was doing.
Harvey leaned right politically, the way your country grandpa probably did, but he wasn't nasty or vicious about it like Flushbo.
And a fairly big percentage of his topic matter was legitimately non-political.

Paul Harvey was like the flyover country meme factory before anyone could visualize such a thing.
