I swear I think the first time I heard it was when Jim Rome's radio show went national.

Driving in L.A. is godawful but at least it's predictable.

Driving in Portland scared the hell out of me. Those people have no clue what they're doing. Only place I've ever seen someone pull to the end of a freeway on-ramp, stop, and turn on the turn signal, waiting for someone to stop and let them in... when traffic was going 60+ miles an hour.

My most recent bit of driving fun in L.A. -- I thought my 14 year old would enjoy the drive on PCH from Santa Monica to Newport. It's 50 miles. It took three and a half hours... and I had forgotten that 90% of that stretch of PCH was inland and mostly muffler shops. By the time we got near water in Seal Beach it was too dark to see it.

One of the toughest drives for me was Miami/Fort Lauderdale/South Florida.

There are about a million roads packed into that last 50-mile chunk of South Florida and what should be the most direct route to the Keys (U.S. 1) takes about six hours because of traffic and traffic lights. There are sudden and random road splits, toll roads that only take EZ Pass (a frightening concept if you're in a rental car and unfamiliar with that process), and a confusing road numbering system with a mishmash of interstates, state roads, U.S. highways, county roads and named highways.

Oh, and if you go less than 85 you're getting run over, but there are a ton of cops running speed traps all over the place so it's hard to get a feel for what the acceptable speed is.. Last time I was driving there it felt like I was cruising along normally until I glanced over and saw my wife white-knuckling it in the passenger seat. I looked at the speedometer and was going about 97, but only moving slightly faster than the traffic.

An additional traffic hellhole I don't think I've seen mentioned: Orlando. I-4 is constantly under construction and in peak tourist time (especially summer) it's a nightmare. No city has more rented minivans and 90 percent of those have no idea where they're going.

Before cellphone overlays ruined the whole concept of an area code.

The 60 is the Pomona Freeway. The 10 is the Santa Monica west of the 110 interchange, then the San Bernardino. Don't know if the KNX traffic crew still refers to it that way, but all of the freeways had names. The San Diego, the Golden State, the Ventura.

Throw in the El Toro Y and you pick up on it pretty quickly.

    The 91? Death.

I live a mile or two north of the El Toro Y. That is where the 405 and 5 merge and become the 5 as it continues through South County to San Diego. And, I live about 4 miles from the Orange Crush. To get from home to Honda Center or Angel Stadium, I have to drive right through the Orange Crush. That's where the 5, 55, 22 and 57 all sorta intersect. Sometimes it takes 45 minutes to go 7 miles, especially when the Ducks and Angels are playing at the same time. It happened a few times several years ago during Ducks playoff runs that went into April.

Sorry to interrupt traffic chatter, but Tiger was moved to Cedars-Sinai tonight...

Anyone have a link for a good accident reconstruction?
