The Korn Ferry Tour used to start its season with a few South American events, those travel expenses were steep and without any handouts. Miss those cuts and you're already in a hole that requires a couple good finishes to get out of, yet you couldn't just skip those events if you're chasing the season-long money race that gets you to The Show.

That life is so hard. You're one bout with the chipping yips away from being home for good and a car salesman.

The KFT guys -- at least the ones fresh out of college -- are more apt to have some endorsement help than some of the journeymen, so that helps with costs. But let's go with your $3K figure, which is reasonable. I looked at a random payout list from a tournament from 2019, and making the cut on the number and finishing 65th would have gotten you $2,600, which is a net loss. You get to the PGA Tour and hold your card and make cuts consistently, you're going to be in more than fine shape. But the men's game is so deep right now that it's not easy to finish in that top 25 on the KFT. That's what makes Lanto Griffin's story so intriguing.

Was basically down to his last couple of hundred dollars, drowning in credit card debt, ready to call it a career. Then wins a Latinoamerica event in Uruguay, which doesn't pay great but at least gives you confidence and status. Won in Nashville on the KFT to help earn his first PGA Tour card, struggles in his first tour, gets demoted back to KFT, wins again in Alabama to regain his card, then wins in Houston on the PGA Tour to secure status and plays well enough to qualify for the Tour Championship to earn his spot in every major and WGC. He's financially secure now and giving back to Youth on Course in our state, which is great. But, man, it was a fucking grind for him to get to that spot.

I caddied a few events on the old Canadian Tour 15 years ago, for kicks.

Those guys were living really lean. My one guy stressed losing balls in practice rounds. They are always looking for a free meal, anything to slow the burn rate. Most of them were supported by family and maybe some members from their home club.

If you read the book “Bud, Sweat and Tees” by Shipnuck about Rich Beem’s rookie season, it explains how a group of people from El Paso CC invested in him, expecting repayment with some profit sharing if he cashed in.

I've nearly nodded off at the wheel a couple of times, but always late at night, never at 7 a.m. Falling asleep at that hour leads to several questions:
    1. Did he not go to sleep the night before?
    2. Did his pain meds kick in? Did he take a couple of extras?
    3. Was his back in such bad shape that he hadn't been able to get a decent night's sleep in a long time, leading to exhaustion?

Didn't coach Herb Brooks reportedly fell asleep before he died in car crash?

Falling asleep was one of the first things I thought of. But then I read about how he was running late and was almost assuredly speeding on a tricky, dangerous stretch of road, so I discounted that theory. I still think he wad also distracted by his phone.

I think the only way we'd ever have found out what really happened is if Tiger hit someone else or if he died, and blessedly none of that happened. So everyone from the vast majority of the media to the cops are content to just let it slide. But it all stinks to high heaven.

The cops have subpoenaed the black box from the car. If he was on the phone they''l know it. Same for his speed before losing control. They did not go after a blood specimen from his admission as doing that requires felony level probable cause, which they do not have.
