The heart wants what it wants, and I wouldn't cast aspersions on Harry for his marriage, but if he were a student of reasonably recent British history and was looking to get out of the Royal Family trap, there was an actual King who pulled off that feat by marrying an American. And Dan, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, who were horrible people, remained very very famous celebrities their entire lives.

 

But the Duke still had to hit up his niece regularly and was persona non grata in the UK. I don't know what type of security Edward or Andrew merit, but I would think Harry would get the same. Though I do understand the idea of "you want your freedom fine - have it." It's always been a double-edged sword being a royal - you have the fame, but it isn't like you can really market that to make a buck and pay for the goodies. You get your stipend and show up when and where you are told to show up.

 

Yes. Aside from the world-wide scandal and being forced into quasi-exile, everything went swell for them.

There are royal children who've gotten away from the circus. They just have to lead a fairly normal life and be pretty quiet about, only showing up for weddings and funerals.

 

Completely lacking in self-awareness, the Windsor couple were apparently very happy to the end of their days. Since he was a fucking Nazi sympathizer, exile was a lucky break for him.

 

The thing is this is a sad story even if they aren't royals. Family members worried about how Black a baby's skin will be? A father who won't take his sons phone calls. Brothers not speaking. A pregnant woman who had suicidal thoughts. All horrible.

 

Did Oprah give them cars? I know they have to be struggling now to not have that royal affiliation.

 

As luck would have it, Alice, myself and my daughter Hope had a long weekend's sightseeing in London and were at Windsor Castle the week before Harry and Meghan's wedding. At the chapel were they were wed, I was fascinated to see that the happy couple would walk directly over the resting place of Charles I during the procession and thought "well at least the dude's not superstitious." The other realization was that the Castle was about 30 percent tourist attraction, 10 percent place where Royal family lives sometimes, and 60 percent office building for Monarchy Inc., the institution. There are a LOT of people for whom the monarchy is a bureaucratic job. Imagine having such a thing attached to your own family. It's a miracle they aren't all more fucked up than they actually are.

 

Sounds pretty much like my area, be we call them hillbillies, not royals.
