Yet Duke and Georgia Tech got to the Final Four ... and both were beaten by Nevada-Las Vegas.

Indiana has been inadvertently using that approach for year, mostly because they don't successfully recruit many five stars. And their ebst teams since the 2002 championship runner up have generally been when they did get a five star lottery pick (Eric Gordon and Cody Zeller).
I don't think a coach can walk away from talent.

And if Kentucky does recruit Shepard or anyone else turns out to be really good they will probably go pro anyway.

Indiana got Romeo Langford for a year
    He was injured and inconsistent
The backup plan was Aaron Henry
He’s become a good player for Michigan State, though I don’t know if he’ll be a NBA player

Part of the problem is that the NBA is so enamored with raw talent and measurables that the very highest five stars can stink it up for their one-and-done year and still feel pretty good about getting drafted (cough, cough, BJ Boston). So how does the college coach get their attention when the player perceives he has no real influence on his future?

Hey, Illinois is pretty fun to watch. An old style team with an aircraft carrier center who sends everybody else out to run and dunk.

Izzo got Emoni Bates to commit but got a couple of others after his commit
Bates might have drawn them to MSU but they’re good enough MSU will be OK even though it looks like Bates is going to G League

From the long long Emoni Bates story in The Athletic, it sounds like Bates' committing to Sparty came as a complete surprise to Izzo and everybody else in the program.
Neither Izzo or any of the assistants can comment on the record on Bates or any other recruit of course, but off the record most of the staff seems highly skeptical he'll ever play a minute of college ball. In fact in terms of scholarship numbers they're pretty much assuming he won't.

Lot of worrying signs around Michigan. Not only is Livers out indefinitely with a stress fracture in his foot, but the offense has looked like ass since they clinched the B1G a week and a half ago. Ohio State nearly choked again until Howard decided, down one, to call an iso for Brown, who missed the last shot and basically missed everything all day.

They'll still get a one but that second weekend might be looking pretty dicey right now depending upon how that bracket holds up.

Also, I heard during the halftime show that the MEAC threw their top seed (NC A&T) out of their one-bid tournament for a COVID positive and the kid has subsequently tested negative three times. That sounds like a lawsuit waiting to happen.

    That happened with Caleb Swanigan
Once Izzo found out about his demands like a personal chef he was happy to let Purdue take him

    Plus Eli Brooks
I’m amazed he came back after the way he went down against MSU

Well, I think Swanigan's people may have noticed that the only post player Izzo has produced in 25 years who's played more than two weeks in the NBA has been Zach Randolph, who wasn't in school long enough to get a parking ticket.
