Whatever Happened to Shame?

You’ve got big dreams. You want shame. Well shame costs. And right here is where you start paying: In sweat.

 

Lost my bet. I figured this was coming back up after last night’s Grammys.

 

Technically it did, my good fellow.

 

What happened? Isn’t shame cultural? Having an affair with babysitter may be shameful to some but impregnating 3 different women and not being in a relationship with any of them may be considered shameless. Imposing shame on another may be racism.

 

I don't know. Tacky and gauche will always be with us but compared to the past, people do have more shame these days.

I mean, at the turn of the 20th century, you could find brothels on almost every corner of any American city. In 1950, a black man could be lynched down south and the whole town would pose for a picture around his body.

It's a pretty low baseline but progress, I suppose, is progress.
