James already had a small share of Liverpool FC, which Fenway Sports Group owns, so this was a logical step, finance-wise. Firm needs capital after a year without live gates at Fenway and Anfield both.

The original owners paid a combined $1.1 billion for the RedSox and Liverpool. It’s now worth $7.3 billion. The big partners sell 11% to an equity group for $750 million cash, they take the cash and get partnership distributions while holding the large majority of the company
Henry and Werner paid $660 million for the Red Sox in 2002 and about $476 million for Liverpool in 2010. Both teams won long-awaited championships under F.S.G. and would almost certainly be worth multiple billions individually if they were sold. RedBird’s (new equity partners) investment will allow F.S.G.’s current partners to cash out some of those gains without relinquishing control of the franchises. According to The Boston Globe, more than $600 million will go to F.S.G. partners. They are getting 60% of their initial investment back, without considering what they’ve realized before. Those guys are now playing completely with house money.

no word on how much James and Carter bought, but at $72million cash for 1% they can afford it.
