The idea that any state "closed down almost everything" is absurd. No state came close to lockdowns as stringent as those in Great Britain, let alone the Asian countries. Some were stricter than others, but all were haphazard, uneven in effect, and all reopened prematurely more than once. My state, Massachusetts, is doing so right now.

    Indeed.

All of the other numbers are very close to one another and about what one would expect. Don't see anything that stands out as particularly good or particularly bad.

You have a very loose description for the word "very." When I look at GDP I don't see anything close at all ($79.2K v. $51.1) nor when I look at population count. And sticking to the death count, Florida's is 5% higher, which seems like a true delta to me.

The difference between the two states in deaths per thousand, applied to Florida’s population, works out to rough 1500 additional deaths. But you know, practically a blip.

You have bigger gross paycheck numbers . . . that get eaten up by taxes/housing. Congratulations. I guess. It's all a wash to me.

I don't live in Florida anymore (still miss it), but I suppose I could sell my house in NC's largest city and buy one twice as expensive in California's largest city. It would do a lot for my GDP, I guess. But I wouldn't. Because I'd be living in this:

    519 Neva Pl, Los Angeles, CA, 90042 | realtor.com®

One third as large. One-sixth as much land. 84 years older. And 3.5 times the property taxes. With a mortgage . And a side order of earthquakes. Woohoo.

I'm afraid until I find some black gold/Texas tea in my back yard, I won't be moving.

For goodness sake ... I don't know why all these byzantine comparisons are getting bandied about, but as re: their respective Covid-19 death rates, the proportion of Florida's population that's 65+ is about 43% higher than the proportion of California's that's 65+*. Even if those states were governed by exactly the same people and were following exactly the same policies, I'd think someone was cooking the books if Florida's death rate wasn't higher.

    * Your numbers may vary slightly based on where you're getting your data and when they did their counting.

And that should be the last word on the subject.***

The general mood here is, "Weeeee! Let's go get riblets!" I'm all for it except the risk of people getting sick is still too high.

    I pick my spots
I got a burger and beers on the beach today
I left early and it was cloudy and in the 60s
Still had to wait 15 minutes
Fortunately the county rules apply so people are wearing masks so DeathSantis can go fuck himself
I am happy for the merchants though
They got the heart of their business cut out last year
DeSantis waited as long as he could to close the beaches and bars before he was shamed into it
Closed them at 5 pm St Patrick’s Day so he ended up costing them one of the biggest days of the year

For the most part, my usual routine helps me a little in this. I work a Tuesday-Saturday schedule and typically only eat out on the weekends, and because I'm either wrapping up stuff on 2 p.m. mail deadline for Fridays or am lazy/tired, most of my interactions with public places have been at off-peak hours and days.
