Pilsner, ugly T shirts and golf tees -- the secret sauce for a modern sports content website.

    Also, what is NLU?

Yeah, interesting. I liked Shipnuck's work at SI but I don't know if I'll make a point of following him to a new spot. There's so much "alternative" golf media now, as you said with NLU probably leading the way. I enjoy fresh opinions on the pro game and how it's covered, what I'm far less interested in are the travel/lifestyle stories and architectural critiques.

I don't know who won, or care, and had not heard of the event until this weekend but I did see a short shot of the winner of the Euro Tour Kenya Open holding his trophy on TV today and it's a bronze of a rhinoceros, and now my failed life dream will be to win this tournament.

Like when I visited Tufts for the first time and saw the life-sized statue of Jumbo the Elephant. My favorite college mascot.

OK, I must discuss something slightly golf-related that is bugging me. I prefer regular length golf socks to the ankle length kind, and I ordered a few pair from Footjoy's Web site last week. They duly arrived and I put a pair on to see how they felt. Stitched into one sock was "Left" and on the other sock "Right." As it turned out, I had put them on that way, but what gives? I have been wearing socks for a long time and these are the first I've ever seen to come with instructions. Is there some reason, some supersecret foot discovery made by Footjoy last year that influenced sock design? I'm wearing a year old pair right now minus signage. Less pressure.

It's not just Footjoy doing the left and right. Bombas, which makes exceptional socks, has been doing it for a while. I'm sure others are as well. Sometimes I pay attention to which is which, other times not. I don't know that I can really tell the difference.

I used to buy New Balance socks that were designed left and right. My fear that, if I put them on the wrong feet, I would end up running in little circles was unfounded. The reason for specifically left and right is because some high-end socks are woven to give extra cushioning and support to specific areas of the foot. Because arches and other parts of feet are opposite from side to side, they need to identify which goes where.

I’m not sure how much difference I really feel, especially after socks have been worn and laundered a few times.

I don't know how I made it through life so far without left and right foot socks!

I have a pair of those L/R FJ socks. Put them on the opposite way and it's a built-in excuse for a shitty round.

I once covered the hosiery beat for an industry rag. There used to be sized mens socks, for specific size feet, instead of just 10-13. A hosiery exec at the time told me every time a funeral went by they said, "There goes another sized sock customer."
