Houston and Arkansas has had some great glory days, but those were decades ago. Decades.

Now, could they be on the rise again? Sure. But they are not national powers in hoops anymore.

I’m sure UNLV thought it had outgrown being a mid-major in the early 90s and certainly by the time it jumped to the Mountain West. But if you aren’t in a true power conference, there’s always a chance you sink back into obscurity.

You can fall into obscurity no matter what conference you’re in.

But nobody questions whether Boston College, Nebraska or DePaul is a mid-major. If they win their league, they’ll get a solid to excellent seed. Wichita State won the AAC and was a coin flip away from missing the play-in round.

Gonzaga is hoping to follow the UNLV model and then avoid the pitfalls. I like the Zags' chances if for no other reason than they are in Spokane and not Sin City.

This is already making me nervous for Cleveland State, which made the tournament this year.

So Creighton is no longer a mid-major?

Houston lost to mighty East Carolina. And Kelvin Sampson is no great shakes.

I know Jim Boeheim can be sour ... but it's Syracuse and not even close.

Syracuse is a feast-or-famine operation. Right now, they're going hungry.
Girard, a local lad who arrived to considerable hype after setting the state scoring record, is a below-average 3-point shooter, having gone .323 and .331 over his first two seasons.
Get out on Boeheim after Orange offensive rebounds and you're in good shape.

Commercials they can bury in a landfill, a non-exhaustive list:

    • Allstate singing hood ornament
    • GMC truck making a tweet in desert sand
    • H&R Block production number
    • Everything with “Chad”

Said it for a while: Gang up on Buddy Boeheim defensively and take your chances with the others.

The others, particularly Dolezaj, are OK. But Buddy is the only assassin and clearly the only serious weapon offensively.
