I’m assuming Thad Matta was hired as assistant AD to help him acclimate to the college game, but what a weird hire.

They're distracted by the envy and recency bias engendered by the guy at Michigan.
That and the fact that they don't want to pay a buyout for the new guy after they just agreed to pay the deposed predecessor $10.4 million.

Marquette's expenditures are somewhat inflated compared to a school like Texas because they rent the Fiserv Forum instead of having an on campus arena. There's a big split on expenses between the Big East teams that primarily use on campus facilities and those that rent NBA arenas.

Won't that get offset a bit when Miller gets a job? No way is he not coaching someplace next season.

Thanks. I was wondering what could cause the big number, and that would do it.

If they were gonna go that route, you'd think they'd have made a more serious stab at poaching Alford.

Alford's college coaching career has been a mixed bag, but he has had some good teams at times. So there's some evidence he might be able to get things going if things broke right for him.

Woodson has never coached in college, at all, thus the need to bring in Matta as a consigliere/babysitter. Plus Woodson is below .500 in the NBA.

But are those great teams far enough in the rearview mirror that the school doesn't differentiate Alford and the '80s from Woodson in the '70s?

I don't necessarily disagree with you – at least Alford has accomplished a lot more in Division whereas Woodson's track record was made in the NBA – but Woodson was more than 40 years ago. Alford was still more than 30 years ago.

Woodson comes across as a pretty good teacher, and seems to have genuine support from the Knicks and others he met along the way. It could be OK, but it will be imperative that he get a strong recruiting closer or two on staff given that he has zero experience with recruiting other than his own as a player.

This does seem to be an example of trying to duplicate the Juwon Howard model. IMO, he's an exception and those who try so hard to emulate this are going to be disappointed with the results.

The good news is this may cause Dan Dakish’s head to explode

Woodson played in the lull period between
the Bucker/Benson/May NCAA champions and the Isiah Thomas champs. Alford played for the 87 champs.
No current or potential future players ever saw either of them play, in college or in their journeyman pro careers. Even their parents would have been kids when Woodson or Alford were playing.
The parents of current college and high school players probably remember the Fab Five, so Howard still has personal name recognition from that.

there are seniors being recruited by Howard who saw him on a team with the most famous player of their lifetimes and win two titles within the last decade. That’s going to count for a lot

it also helps him that he has two kids who are highly rated recruits, so kids know him that way

Howard was also talked up all the time by his fellow pros as a guy who would be a good coach. And when it comes to appealing to younger players, I'd note that the 30 for 30 on the Fab Five was at one point ESPN's highest rated doc, and that ESPN and ABC usually replays the hell out of it every March.
