Anybody who has coached in the NBA for a couple of years knows the deal, and it's not changing. The players are in charge.
You've really got to hate that or at least be uncomfortable with it to go back to college and its highly uncertain landscape. That landscape will soon include the fact that the players are in charge there, too. Maybe not to the same degree as they are in the pros, but the one-time, no-excuse, immediate transfer rule will be a game-changer. Coaches will have to engage in three types of recruiting at once: high school players, other college players and their own players. I wouldn't want to deal with that.

He'll probably be a regular at Boshamer. He was at all of the Heels' CWS appearances, as I remember, and seemed to be a legit baseball fan, not just a guy looking to get his face on TV. Microville Tech fans took special pleasure watching him go home disappointed.

College got a lot more difficult with the transfer portal - you not only have to recruit high schools, but a) keep your own players home and b) transfers. The sole benefit has to be the longer contracts offered in college - sure it's less money, but you can figure out if you'll be a millionaire next year or might need to be looking for work. I've always marveled at those coaches who landed three or four NBA gigs (RIP Stan Albeck). Sure they got fired a ton, but they did enough when they had a gig to earn a second shot.

Roy seemed to be more attuned to decline – both physically and mentally – than most. I get it from watching Dean slide. I get it because of at least two family members.

It troubles Roy, so from a certain point of view, he was being selfless by stepping away and letting someone else handle it. The problem is that too many don't, that either they're afraid of facing those potential issues or convince themselves that those issues won't apply to them.

There is an interesting contrast here between Roy Williams on one hand and coaches -- particularly, it seems, college football coaches -- who admit they stick around because they're afraid that stopping will either kill them or make them miserable.

Discussion on sports radio here about the possibility of UNC taking a run at Nate Oats. Consensus was that if North Carolina basketball makes a run at a coach he has to listen, much like if 'Bama football does. They were laughing a bit at local fans who can't understand why someone would leave UA being the same people who couldn't understand why any coach wouldn't crawl over broken glass to interview with Alabama.

Bottom line was that Oats' buyout is $12.5 million. I'm sure UNC could come up with that if they wanted him, but they'd have to want him very badly indeed.

Roy isn't going anywhere. Assuming good health, he will go to every football, men's basketball, women's basketball and baseball game he can. Betting he goes to plenty of Anson Dorrance's matches, too.

In far less noticed Carolina basketball news, Mark Prosser (son of Skip) makes the short journey from Western Carolina to Winthrop.

I'm all for Mark Prosser winning big at Winthrop and being ready when the next Wake Forest change becomes necessary.
