Do you think there’s a single scout or front office type who looks at RBI anymore when they are going to sign a player?

There are very few uncommon or special plays in a typical baseball game. Baseball probably has a higher percentage of routine plays - strikeout, grounder to short, fly ball to center, etc. - than any other sport.

And any play that scores a run is good. A weak grounder that scores a guy from third delivers the same result as a well-struck 395-foot sac fly to center field. I don't confuse results with aesthetics.

I hope more people link stories about launch angle and spin rotation and exit velocity and all the other things that make 2021 baseball so compelling.

Yermin Mercedes just hit a 75-foot dribbler down the third base line, beating out the throw for a base hit. No one was on third, though. Is he any good? I have no way to tell.

To quote Poin quoting Coleman, whoop de damn do indeed: Braves have played 3 games and only Panda (2) and d’Arnaud (1) have an RBI.

And promptly exited the game with what looked to me like a sprained knee, at best.

He has six RBIs in 14 at-bats. Of course he's good.

The Angels' Jared Walsh got 3 RBIs with a game-winning homer against the White Sox. Of course, two of those RBIs were meaningless because the Angels only needed one to win.

Impressive HOMERUN. But the exact same as what Pujols did.

    Not enough info, Scout.

So when people say RBIs are not important, not enough information should be the reply?

But, who has the “highest career percentage of scoring a runner from third with two outs” doesn’t fit well on a baseball card. Neither does “scoring runner from second with one out” or all the other RBI situations where getting the runners across is important.

Maybe OPS with runners on base, but that two-out walk with a runner on third is way less valuable than the hitter that gets a hit in that situation.
