    but many cops are stupid.
And stupid people suck at conflict resolution.
When was the last time you saw two smart people in a bar fight?

Many? There are roughly 700,000 cops in the country. 35,000 would be many cops, it’s also 5%. 5% of journalists are stupid. 5% of teachers are stupid. 10% of lawyers are stupid. Many journalists, teachers and lawyers are stupid. The overwhelming majority are not.
I’ve always said that almost no cop graduates in the top 25% of their HS or College graduating class. Most cops are not stupid. They aren’t scientifically inclined, generally. Or the most literate. But they are smart enough to do the job. These traffic stop racist interactions are ridiculous. It’s is often outright prejudice and bigotry that leads to examples like the one in Virginia. It’s also safe to say that for every one bad traffic stop we know about there are 10 equally as bad that we don’t. It’s also fair to say that we don’t know about the other 11,000 a day that are appropriate. Should police stop enforcing speeding laws and DUI laws?

cops are doing pretty good jobs under very difficult circumstances. Given the crime level, they are understaffed. And they are dealing with the worst people on a daily basis. They just assume, wrongly, that every interaction with a citizen is a threat. But they are more likely to deal with a legitimate threat to their lives everyday then Almost everyone who criticizes them.
My fervent hope is that those who are quick to rightly or wrongly criticize cops would become police officers and do the job the right way, in addition to calling attention to a problem. I have worked with my local officials to create scholarship Programs at nearby HBCUs for those in the criminal
Justice program. Scholarships for college and guaranteed admittance into their community’s police academy followed by jobs as police officers.this puts member of the community onto the police force that may not have considered being cops.

Those ACLU lawyers who criticize cops, did any of them think that joining a police department would be better than becoming a lawyer?

When stupid journalists fuck up they print something wrong.
When stupid lawyers fuck up their cases get dismissed.
When stupid cops fuck up people die.

There's a tremendous difference. And until we implement a system that equally rewards mental aptitude the way it does military service on the Civil Service exam, this will keep happening, especially after sending soldier after soldier to the Middle East for Goddam near two decades and simply pencil pushing them through the system with limited decompression and mental health assistance. As a matter of fact, I'd rethink how we grade civil service exams for police applicants. This job is too important both from a safety and liability standpoint to just blindly award extra points to any old veteran who applies. It was common knowledge when I was a cops reporter that you had no chance in hell of getting on the police force unless you served in the military because veterans received extra points on the exam.

And this doesn't even get into the fact that the military has had to lower its entrance requirements because Americans are becoming fatter and, yes, more stupid.

Society needs to convince young people that becoming electrical engineers, physicists, lawyers, doctors, pilots, writers, artists and teachers isn’t as worthwhile as becoming cops.
If journalists weren’t so lazy and interested in immediate gratification Trump wouldn’t be president. But Jeff Zucker and CNN loved the money that Trump brought in and weren’t nearly as critical and analytical as they should have been. 540,000 dead Americans is not solely on journalists, but they have some responsibility.

How to go traffic stop to dead? Police being “disrespected “, that’s all. That’s not enough. We pay them, we need to change them.
