We have other vaccines that are in solid, if not yet plentiful, supply. It’s a setback but it is the responsible thing to do while we gather more data.

Pausing use of JNJ for that number of cases seems insane.

Perhaps encourage women 30-60 to choose Moderna or Pfizer if they have choice when getting vaccinated at most.

It's 6 cases, but those were the severe reactions. ... They want to also make sure that there haven't been more mild clotting issues they may not know about. ... more cases of this that they are missing and were potentially dangerous. It's better to try to investigate it and figure out what the deal is.

The problem is that they didn't want to revoke the emergency use authorization or give the vaccine a stigma, so they seem to be trying to do it gingerly.

My guess is that it is something related to the adenovirus vaccines and this coronavirus, because it sounds eerily similar to the Astrazeneca vaccine.

We’re in a race against the variants and decided to take off one of our shoes because it has a pebble in it.

People need to stop with that kind of spot punditry.

It may or may not be limited to 6 cases out of 6.8 million. It has been 6 cases that were so severe that it put those blood clots on a radar screen. It looks exceedingly rare based on the information they have right now. ... but that is the problem, they don't have good information. The incidence of these blood clots may (or may not) be greater than they realize. ... because nobody was monitoring it until now. That is part of what the FDA is doing, being cautious. ... they are telling health care providers to monitor clotting issues and they want to educate providers on how to treat these kinds of clots.

If this pause is of a short period of time, fine. But if we’re talking weeks or longer, people will die and suffer unnecessarily.

The monitoring and educating of doctors on the specialized clotting can continue while the vaccines are given.

Good luck getting anyone sitting on the fence to get vaccinated now, let alone take the JNJ vaccine.

The pause should be as long as it makes sense to pause. ... you should want htem to make sure about the safety of the vaccine. It typically takes 10 to 15 years to develop a vaccine. The majority turn out to either not be efficacious or not safe. It takes time to figure out those safety issues. This was done in less than a year. ... because of the seriousness of the pandemic they rushed it into usage. That was the right thing to do. But a potential blood clotting issue can be serious. You don't want to be alarmist because the info CURRENTLY is that it is limited in scope. But you don't want people's arteries to start exploding a month from now. If something like that happened, many of the same people who are now yelling about the pause would be the first calling for heads.

Yup. But if 6 becomes 60 or god forbid 600, their hysteria will be amplified if not justified. Pause JnJ, which already had a bad rep, and let’s get on with manufacturing and distributing the other two vaccines.

600 out of 7 million would justify anti-vaxxers? Jesus Christ.

Good luck getting two shots, many of them needing refrigeration, to the people of Africa.

    https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...-calculus-johnson-johnson-vaccine-visualized/

Given the effectiveness of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine in preventing serious illness and death, vaccinating 6.8 million people could have prevented 123,000 deaths. That number is certainly too high, given that many of those deaths preceded a robust understanding of how to treat the disease and given that many of the most at-risk individuals were vaccinated with the Pfizer and Moderna shots that were approved earlier. But it is still the case that protected millions of individuals likely prevented thousands of deaths — with six problematic incidents.
