When I covered Nascar in its better days I wrote a weekly truck series story, which was a lot of fun because I could easily get drivers on the phone. Older guys like Todd Bodine, Mike Skinner, Jack Sprague and Rick Crawford (years before he got sent up the river) were happy that someone still wanted to talk to them; and young guys were happy to get publicity early in their careers. And like you said, the races weren't a huge commitment. SPEED did a good job with them back then.

Contrast that to Cup, where you'd have zero, zip, zilch chance of talking to anyone unless you were at the track. And even then you'd be lucky to get anything outside a scrum.

That's what I always loved and appreciated about my days covering NHRA. The biggest stars actually wanted to do interviews and give you access beyond belief.

I miss the nitro. Every year I tell myself I'm going to take my kids to the Big Go but something else always comes up over Labor Day weekend. I should just go myself sometime, eat all the fatty foods and wander the pits.

I haven’t listened yet but apparently Marcus Smith, who calls the shots at SMI these days, went on Dale Jr’s podcast this week and at one point said he’s thinking of things that can be done with North Wilkesboro.
Spring Texas date was moved to Circuit of the Americas.

Not rain tires, but after the rain has stopped. Trying to deal with the long times it takes to dry some tracks.

He threw it out there as red meat to Junior’s listeners. They talked about it for maybe a minute. He offered no specifics.

(It didn’t happen when Junior Johnson was alive so I’m skeptical it ever will. And Rockingham remains mostly unused.)

I’m wondering if COTA is a one- or two-off, with that date going to the Nashville Fairgrounds in 2023. And I have no inside knowledge, but I’m wondering if Kentucky is done as a Cup track.

When a Sunday afternoon in Atlanta in mid-July is preferable, it’s not just done as a Cup track. It’s Nazareth.

I’m not sure who’s behind the current ownership group at Rockingham. In October it’s supposed to host a date in the series that used to be Hooters Cup; we’ll see what happens with it. That date was postponed from early March after a tire test showed that its current spec tire wears too much at Rockingham. My guess is that it’s hosted its last NASCAR show.

I drove by the place a couple of weeks ago. There isn't much that can be done with it at this point. It would be cheaper to tear down all the stands and start fresh. I can't say anything about the track surface, but what you can see from the highway is dilapidated.

I'll be passing by Rockingham this afternoon. They've done a lot of work around the place, but I'm not so sure that the owners aren't more interested in concerts and events than they are racing these days.
