Boy, Sonny Jurgensen would be in trouble in today's draft.

So did Cardale Jones ... and Troy Smith ... and JT Barrett ... and Joe Germaine ... and Craig Krenzel ...

Fields may be the one to finally break the mold, but the mold is well established. There are something like 40 former Buckeye offensive players in the NFL right now. Their QBs, all excellent college players, have benefitted mightily from that. Until a Buckeye QB succeeds in the pros, I'm not risking a high pick on one.

I do think there is a question for both Fields and Jones about how much their receivers elevated their games. But this is a league that goes back to the Belichick tree time and again, goes for the "bright young offensive mind" as a HC and I can't think of any recent successes in either case. Jon Gruden might be the last "BYOM' to win a Super Bowl and its been 20 years - and it was his second team. Sean Payton was 47.

OK ... I'll go with this.

But, if so, why isn't Trey Lance getting pummeled worse than he already is given Carson Wentz' career arc?

If you refuse to take Justin Fields because he went to Ohio State, do you then go with Mac Jones of Alabama (last good NFL QB: Ken Stabler, drafted in 1968), or Trey Lance of North Dakota State (home of Carson Wentz, arguably the worst QB in the league last year)?

Would you pass on Trevor Lawrence because Clemson has produced one good QB and he's probably a rapist?

Thankfully Zach Wilson went to BYU, sometimes referred to as Quarterback U. The last good NFL QB to come out of BYU will turn 60 in October.

Joey Germaine and Craig Krenzel weren't considered serious NFL prospects by any measure. Troy Smith won a Heisman, but it was more about his athletic ability than playing quarterback. 12 Gauge had the size and the live arm, but he wasn't a productive passer, even in college. The offense was based around the line and Zeke. Bobby Hoying is probably the last guy that I could look at and say he might've made it. None of these guys are on Fields' level though. And that's not to say that Fields is going to break the chain or anything, but no one was looking at Craig Krenzel as an NFL quarterback.

    While holding a clipboard.

It was a statistically amazing career - 14 seasons in the NFL, and in fully half of them he didn’t throw a single pass.

But even he's probably jealous of Chase Daniel's career ... or at least of his agent, who has managed to make countless millions.

My personal hero is AJ Feeley. Went to my alma mater, spent 11 years in the NFL as a QB and never stepped on the field in five of those years. Married Heather Mitts.

And in his last game, he didn't even have to practice. Lonie Paxton couldn't snap for the Broncos in a divisional-round game at New England, so they phoned Binn and flew him to Denver to catch the charter to Providence. He got his first work with Britton Colquitt and Matt Prater in warmups. He played the game, flew home and went back to the retired life, having never set foot on the Broncos' practice field.
