And the Padres, once owned by the owner of McDonald's, now gives fans Jumbo Jacks from Jack in the Box when a friar homers at home.

A kid from Toledo who played at Central Michigan and got drafted in the 33rd round. But he wasn't a 1-1 SEC pitcher, so Al Avila and his crack scouting staff would never have seen him play.

I thought some guy who played at Toledo or someplace for a long time in the Tigers' organization was the all-time minor-league HR leader. Not gonna Google but his last name started with H, I think. Had about 250-plus HRs.

Didn't Jigger Statz or somebody like that have about 3500 hits in the PCL?

Mike Hessman holds the all-time International League (AAA East?) career record for homers.

Jigger Statz had 3,356 hits for the PCL's Los Angeles Angels. In 1926 he played 199 games, had 823 at-bats and 291 hits. He played in 171 games or more in six seasons, and was a .285 career hitter in the majors before being sent down for good after the 1928 season.

Some guys back then made major-league money in the PCL and loved living on the West Coast so they just stayed in the minors.

The PCL was very close to being equivalent to the majors from around the 1920s through the early 50s because players’ salaries and attendance were comparable to the majors. They even applied for major league status at one point, but Organized Baseball declined and instead, gave them a quadruple-A status for a few years.

Sone players looked at the PCL as an extension of their major league careers. Once they were done in the majors, they went to the PCL.

He wasn’t the best ever, but I so badly wanted Jeff Manto to stick in the bigs at some point. .900 career OPS in the minors, more than 200 home runs, over 1200 hits. The guy just was the poster child for AAAA slugger.

Manto's number is retired by the Buffalo Bisons. He is in the Bisons' and the Rochester Red Wings halls of fame.
