We had a local guy like that. Not quite that good, and he was the furthest thing from a power hitter you could imagine (800+ hits and seven home runs, at least one of which was inside the park), but he spent eight years in the minors and never got the call. He was productive throughout his career, but for whatever reason he stalled out at Triple-A.
Seemed like every time he got hot there wasn't an opening at his position, and then when there was an opening he was in a slump. We'd do an update on him every summer, and by the fourth or fifth year I wanted so badly to make that call to congratulate him on getting a call-up. He's just a good guy who you just wanted to see get that experience, even if it was only to cover somebody's DL stint as the 25th man on the roster. The stars just never aligned for him.
You really feel for guys like that, especially when you see so many other players shit the bed and still get chance after chance while dealing with things like PEDs, drug abuse, domestic violence, and all other manners of off-field scumbaggery.

As a kid growing up in Indy, we had Razor Shines. Great AAA player. Great name. Our Crash Davis.

Managed in the minors. Last I remember he was the third base coach for the Mets a few years ago.

The guy I remember thinking was wasting his time in the minors was Justin Verlander. Him pitching in Lakeland and Erie was unfair. Skipped Toledo altogether.

I wondered if the playoffs with Boston may have turned out differently if he hadn't been injured . First game, I think.
