Bingo! That was my primary beef with the OJ trial, the DA moved the trial downtown when OJ chose to live in Brentwood. He was only entitled to a jury pool of his peers in Brentwood. I thought Garcetti moved it because he thought he had such a good case, he did not want to think he got a crutch with the Brentwood pool. Of course, I think logistics may have had an impact too in that they did not think the Brentwood courthouse could handle the trial.

This seems to be Derek Chauvin’s closing argument

A jury of your peers simply means a jury made up of fellow citizens.

The issue in the OJ trial was whether it would be tried in Santa Monica. The prosecution stood little chance in downtown LA, they probably would have won in Santa Monica. Gil Garcetti took crap for the venue change for some incomprehensible reason, but it wasn't his decision. He may be a putz, but that wasn't his doing. The decision was made by a judge on the LA Superior Court. The big factor, IIRC, was an earthquake that had damaged the Santa Monica courthouse. Garcetti would have prefered it in the more afflient, weathier area, with a whiter jury, of course.

Sorry, not trying to be overbearing, but according to Wikipedia (and some other accounts online):

District Attorney Gil Garcetti elected to file charges in downtown Los Angeles, as opposed to Santa Monica, in which jurisdiction the crimes took place.[122] The Los Angeles Superior Court then decided to hold the trial in Downtown Los Angeles instead of Santa Monica due to safety issues[clarification needed] at the Santa Monica Court house. The decision may have affected the trial's outcome because it resulted in a jury pool that was less educated, had lower incomes, and contained more African Americans.[123] Richard Gabriel, a jury consultant for Simpson, wrote that more educated jurors with higher incomes are more likely to accept the validity of DNA evidence and the argument that domestic violence is a prelude to murder. Gabriel notes that African Americans, unlike other minorities, are far more likely to be receptive to the claim of racially motivated fraud by the police.[122]

So it was Garcetti's decision, not the judge's decision.

You're not being overbearing. I forgot that he had filed in downtown LA for some reason. I really thought it had been solely a judges decision. It is kind of coming back to me now. ... He did a revisionist thing afterward saying that he filed there because he already knew it was going to moved there (better security, the earthquake, etc.), but now I seem to remember that privately he was telling people that he didn't want to win in Santa Monica, because he thought it would lack credibility, and he thought he had a slam dunk case even in LA.

Chauvin's probably going down but Nelson is earning his money with this closing.
