They potentially get a few players. It’s a silly cliche, if that’s the case there would never be trades for picks.

Of course. But when you're dealing players for picks, aren't you conceding something? At least it seems like it. If I see myself as a contender, I'm not trading with a fellow contender. The Ravens, for now, at least, weakened themselves and strengthened the Chiefs. Seems like a net-loss for Baltimore. In 3-5 years, when picks play out, maybe not so much. Those picks likely won't help as much this year, though, as Brown will help the Chiefs.

Maybe they really like their current backup at the position? Belichick would routinely trade or let starters walk, because he thought backups or tactics could replace their production.

Considering they are rumored to be signing Villanueva as a free agent, I’m guessing they don’t have a back up they are very happy with. And I get what you’re saying about Belichick, but wasn’t his MO more to play guys until they were at the crest of their career effectiveness and then get rid of them? He would rather get rid of guys too soon and too late.

I think Villanueva is also insurance in case Ronnie Stanley isn't fully back from ankle surgery. Their line was effective even after they lost Stanley during the first game against the Steelers last season. That was with Brown taking Stanley's place at left tackle.

Brown is only 24, so this isn't like what Belichick would do. Brown supposedly wanted out if the Ravens weren't going to play him at left tackle, but they gave Stanley a huge contract last offseason to play that position. The Ravens may have felt that they had to trade Brown. They did get a nice return, but I agree that they weakened their own team while helping another AFC contender.

Brown wants to play left tackle
That won’t happen as long as Ronnie Stanley is there
Trade him, make him happy, get a No.1
The Ravens draft well enough they should get a replacement in a draft that is supposed to be deep at OT

Latest report I saw seems to be hinting Villanueva to Baltimore is not such a done deal and the Ravens could go for a RT in the draft.

When you've been in one too many scrimmages without your helmet...

That should be entertaining. I can envision a periodic "Culkin Bitcoin Watch" in the local paper.

The Ravens under Ozzie Newsome and now Eric DeCosta believe in having as much draft capital as possible. They have the belief in their scouting departments to consistently make good picks and in their mind they will get more value out of those picks than they would an unhappy right tackle.

It's going to be interesting. Will the first three picks be who we think? What does Atlanta do at four? Do Denver or maybe the Bears take a run at trading for that fourth pick?

This draft's first round feels as wide open as I remember. Guess we'll see.
