Mare of Eastown is the most infuriating series I've seen in a while.

I don't know where to begin about how stupid the show has become. But I'll start with Frank and the convo with his lesbian daughter..."How's things with my future step mom?" "Not good, we're done. But things will get better..."

So Frank's not furious that his ex-wife has the entire town thinking he's a pedophile, destroying his relationship and putting his career in jeopardy? WTF? Why has he not confronted Mare and held her accountable?

And remind me again why on earth we care one iota about:
    1. The lesbian daughter
    2. Her relationship(s)
    3. Mare's friend
    4. Mare's friend's cheating husband
    5. Mare's friend's cheating husband's son
    6. And a random Down's girl? Who somehow goes to a school that has less adult supervision than Charlie Brown's elementary.

And remind me again whatever happened to:
    1. The dead girl in the creek...oh yea, her galpal may or may not be involved, it's too murky to tell
    2. The dead girl's baby daddy's daddy who apparently is talking to Mare's friend about adopting the bastard son?
    3. Guy Pearce??? They built up the tension over "which gentlemen suitor will Mare pick for her hot date Saturday night" and then never returned to that tension. Not to mention, Pearce has completely disappeared, which just drives home the fact he was miscast in the first place.

What was the point of the car crash, the power going out and the missing turtle? Am I supposed to believe Mare hasn't snooped around on her daughter's computer for years already?

I get that big serieses are directed by various people but this series seems to have multiple directors within each episode. One director loves random close-ups (a beer bottle here, a coffee mug there, neither of which went on to provide a plot point). One director loves wacky, awkward comedy complete with Curb Your Enthusiasm jingly music (from caught-in-the-act teenaged sex angst that was done better in Sixteen Candles to "I have to admit I cheated on my dead wife hahahah!"). Another director loves gritty violence shot in the dark, while yet another wants to add a slice of a Saw set to their portion of the drama (look, there's wallpaper peeling off the walls and the house/bar has huge holes in the walls despite it being in a cold climate!).

OK, as for the big scene...WTF? Mare totally forgets how to be a cop. Why didn't they leave the minute they realized the Winstons were there, knowing that Mare was unarmed? Then when the shit hit the fan, why did Mare suddenly become as helpless as every other female victim in every other cop show ever filmed? I mean, even down to the sneaking-up-behind-my-attacker-and-smashing-him-over-the-head trope. Why didn't she beat him to a pulp? Why didn't she grab his gun?

Have I mentioned this show is infuriating?

    Quality rant.

I agree this has gotten formula driven.

It’s still worth watching for Winslet and Smart.

    How many are left?

Yes, @TigerVols. I'm with you. I feel like the first 2.5 episodes were very solid and now it has introduced so many characters and plotlines and rabbit holes that I can't keep everything straight.

@Scout , there are two more episodes left.

Great rant, TV, especially about the key scene in this week's episode, which I finally caught up on last night. So much potential here but so much poor execution.

Agreed. I was disappointed. The whole episode felt disjointed and the big moment felt like it came out of nowhere.

I'm a sucker for emotional scenes so they've been giving me the rollercoaster ride. Its coming to the end and one theory (twist) I've seen is too convenient.

Winslet has taken this entire show on her shoulders.

Smart is good too, but this is a fucking tour de force.
