The Missoulian, a distinguished daily newspaper serving western Montana from Missoula, is seeking a sports editor eager to live in a great place and play a key role on a ground-breaking team.

The Missoulian has long been the go-to source for coverage of the Montana Grizzlies, far-flung high schools of all sizes, and sports geared toward the region’s active residents. The three-person staff is also an integral part of the innovative 406mtsports.com team covering the entire state.

We’re looking for a leader who knows that vibrant digital and print sports section go beyond the traditional game story and box score. The ideal candidate will bring creative content ideas, a desire to explore new ways to capitalize on the award-winning work the staff produces, and the ingenuity to re-package and reformulate coverage strategies at a paper with early (7:30-8 p.m.) daily deadlines.

The job includes directing two full-time staffers who cover Montana football and men’s basketball as part of their duties. The ability and willingness to collaborate closely with the 406mtsports.com executive sports editor and three other Lee Montana sports editors is essential. Reporting and page trafficking are also part of a role.

Leadership experience at a daily newspaper is preferred, but we’ll also consider reporters with proven track records ready to jump into management. You’ll be a valued figure in an aggressive and vibrant newsroom that focuses on digital and enterprise reporting.

Missoulian employees cherish their work-life balance, and plentiful recreation opportunities are just out the back door. Fishing, skiing, hiking and camping options abound, and Yellowstone and Glacier national parks are short drives away. Missoula has a thriving arts, dining and social scene, and it’s a great place to raise a family.

We offer an excellent benefits package, including medical, dental, vision, 401K plan, and generous paid time off. Salary will depend on experience.

We are an equal-opportunity employer. You can see our website at www.missoulian.com and learn more about our parent company at www.lee.net.

Grapevine says this job may no longer be available — not because it has been filled, but because the previous holder of the position is staying on.

Apparently they're looking for a sports reporter to cover the University of Montana football team (which has a huge following) and prep sports.

My two cents: Great college town, beautiful area, great beat ... at a Lee Enterprises paper. Your mileage may vary.

In addition to the daily stuff, you can expect to produce a lot of copy and agate for Grizzly Game Day, the Missoulian’s weekly guide to Griz football. That Saturday issue during football season sells big just so Griz fans have rosters and depth charts going into the stadium.
