Abraham Lincoln: "The legitimate object of Government is to do for a community of people whatever they need to have done but cannot do at all, or cannot so well do, for themselves in their separate and individual capacities. But in all that people can individually do as well for themselves, Government ought not to interfere."

Do you think the party of Lincoln believes that?

Something like that makes sense. For three weeks, the only news about Covid was the declining vaccination rates. Then, all of a sudden, great news. Cast aside your masks. Seems odd.

The whole notion that being an “outsider” is a qualification is absurd. Ask Jimmy Carter how that manifested itself. It got him elected but proved his undoing.

Carter failed as an outsider because Tip O’Neil and Robert Byrd, and their filibuster proof majorities, were unwilling to work with a Democrat President. Carter wasn’t a great politician but he knew how government worked. Tip hated his guts because Carter was honest to a fault and Byrd thought he was Cicero.

    I mean, does either party?

The Democrats don't appear to believe the community of people can do much of anything for themselves, so I suppose they embrace the edict, but in a way that treats most of us like 7-year-olds who don't know what to do with our feelings.

The Republicans have their own moments of this, too.

O'Neil hated Carter because to save money he cut back on the WH legislative breakfast.
