I’ve had a $1 a week digital subscription to the NYT for several years. Each time it expires and the price goes up, I call to cancel and they extend my $1 a week subscription.

$1 for a half-year digital subscription. Is this the cheapest offer available from any New Gannett paper?

Heard there's some "job leveling" discussions at a few Gannett shops today. Good luck, everybody...

The remaining Gannett journalists are represented by Chevy Chase. The Gannett executives are represented by Wallace Shawn. Not sure who Randy Quaid represents, so I'll let you decide.

Must be the end of the pay period. A lot of chains pull that.

Is there an "endgame" to all these almost for nothing digital subscriptions? Have newspapers finally figured out how to sell their subscribers data to advertisers and microtarget? I'm honestly asking. Not sure newspapers have traditionally used subscriber information for additional revenue.

At least if the Providence Journal is any indication, Gannett/Gatehouse is going to just layer ad on top of ad on top of ad, and sell by volume. Check out this story - You have a flashy, full page ad at the very top. Once you scroll down a little, you have an ad to the right of the story, as well as a video ad in the lower right corner, and the banner has two small house ads to subscribe. Page down once - the ad on the right is replaced by spon-con from Verizon and USA Today. Then, page down again, and there is more spon-con / "synergy" from USA Today and Verizon in the middle of the story, about the NBA playoffs. (By the way - It's an education story I linked.) This is a new design, so they did get rid of the endless ad scroll, but there's another three to six ads at the bottom.

Clicked it. Apparently my ad-blocker defeated it.

I think right now it’s get as many people in the door as possible and hope that enough of them stay when their deal ends
