Your suspicion is right on. Another interview I heard yesterday or the day before was with Danny Meyer who runs restaurants and he was talking about this. A lot of people who worked in his restaurants fled New York when the pandemic hit, because without their job, they couldn't afford to stick around. The subsequently found other jobs, like driving or working at big box retailers, etc. And his sense was that some of them won't be coming back, and it is going to take a while for the restaurants to work that out.

This is the problem with just looking at one thing, though. When the last job opening numbers came out a week and a half ago, this phenomenon was not just a restaurant thing. That is getting a lot of focus, because there was a rush of people wanting to go to restaurants again, but as we open up, the mess we have is more systemic than that. There are a lot of jobs in other retail areas -- mostly small businesses which used to provide the bulk of jobs -- that can't find workers. This is hitting the transportation industry. They can't find drivers, for example.

How much is the service/hospitality industry hurt by lack of foreign workers who can't get their visas because of state department slowdowns?

"We pay shit wages and don't offer any benefits except the occasional free pizza. People have better options than to work for us, but we need to virtue signal."

"Please be patient with the staff that did come to work today ..."

As opposed to the staff who chose to no longer work there and found other jobs because the pay was shitty, who should just show up anyway and work for free?

Ask the owner if he took the stimulus checks and other "government handouts" given to business owners in the two Covid relief bills.

    Fuck that place.

A local fast food place has “Stimulus checks paid weekly” on its marquee, which is a bit more subtle but still kind of cringe.

People who don't want to make jobs made for teenagers a lifetime calling are traitors.
