Wasn’t sure to put this here or in the Twitter thread.

Cecil and Prince Fielder frequently played as designated hitters, where they did no fielding.

The M's had four players hitting .176 or less in the lineup at the end of their win over Oakland today.

Two others were hitting .218 and .200. No one with more than 20 at-bats was hitting more than .250.

And yet they are one game above .500.

Fielder Jones (yes, his real first name was Fielder) had a .962 career fielding percentage. He also managed the “Hitless Wonders” 1906 White Sox to a World Series title.

He was then the head coach at Microville Tech in 1910, then managed in the Federal League.

He was from Shinglehouse, PA., a little town near the NYS border, about 20 miles from where all of my paternal and maternal relatives grew up. He attended Alfred University, as did my parents. And Carl "The Pitch That Killed" Mayes, who likewise retired to Oregon, was one of two players to attend his funeral. And we share a birthday.

Just think if Cecil Fielder had been enough of a baseball history buff to name his son after Fielder Jones instead of Prince Rogers Nelson

Fielder's middle name was Allison. Probably a family last name, but still ... his parents didn't do him any favors. Final coincidence, I had a very good friend in college named Allison Jones. She now works in fundraising at my alma mater.
