I say this as someone who is pasty white...

This is the stuff that white people don't get. This is institutional, systemic racism. The fact that this was installed as recently as the 1990s and it took 15-20 years to even acknowledge it, much less remove it, is abhorrent.

And this is just a pro sports league. Just imagine how often things like this occur throughout the world.

Humans suck.

 

I've lived in the South all my life. It's a whole lot better than it was when I was a kid. I think that in a general sense that Southerners who've been around Black folks all their lives deal with it better. That said, things were not nearly as good as I thought before Trump dumped all sorts of vile behavior out of Pandora's box and then normalized it. There are far more racist assholes than I thought, and some of them are very bad indeed and totally unrepentant.

The number of slights, the general unfairness and inertia of the system has to be a massive everyday burden for Black people. The tension of never knowing when it might happen or what direction it might come from, the stress. It's like that clip of the lady speaking on race to a very white crowd, and she says "If you would be willing to exchange lives and live as a Black person here in America, raise your hand."

Everyone looks around but no hands go up.

That shit with the NFL is inexcusable. It meant that black players with equivalent damage received a far smaller settlement, and it was deliberate, intended to screw them and keep the money. Lowlifes.
