Our paper was hiring like crazy, adding community sections left and right. We even made a joke about it during one of our annual awards presentations that every street had its own community edition.
During that time I turned down overtures from San Jose, Memphis and West Palm Beach to stay in Fort Lauderdale. At that time, as a desk person in an industry where everyone wanted to be a writer, I felt like I could go to any paper I wanted.

There are so many factors going into the unemployment rate that it’s a pretty useless metric right now. Between rural and urban areas. State to state. Industry to industry. It’s a weird mishmash of boom and bust. An abundance of shitty jobs and no good jobs. A workforce tremendously motivated at the top rungs and completely apathetic at the bottom. A workforce that was always going to be short workers as baby boomers exit. And a workforce that is less than motivated to return with enhanced benefits and wonky hours.

Just a peek at how weird it is: Right now I’ll work a 10-hour shift for three days, we’ll run out of steel or extrusion bars and get two days off. Then back to 10-hour days. And my employer balances competing motivations to keep us under a certain number of hours so we can collect enhanced benefits if we work under a certain number of hours under a shared work program and a booming demand for our product as hospitals start getting back to ordering non-Covid related products.

It’s going to take time to see what this job market actually looks like. Anyone who says they know is a liar.

This was often the best card to play.

And moreover, they wanted to hire people who wanted to desk. They didn't want another person on a desk shift asking if there were writing opportunities.

This is precisely why, issues of sexism and misogyny aside, it's important that the term "stupid bitch" should remain in wide public use. In fact this very exchange would have been a perfect situation for its use.

The keys and knives and forks stick to the skin of the trailer trash trumpists because the hillbilly fuckers don't bathe more than once or twice a month. That was a thought ... not proven yet.

So if there was a cancer vaccine, you wouldn't get it because you haven't had cancer yet? Checks out.

Between he and Marsha Blackburn, Mississippi State is not exactly polishing its credentials as a Mensa factory.
