That's terrible. Really. But as far as the school is concerned, it's more about the fear of liability/legal issues than racism.

Schools are notoriously focused on liability.

Following long-published procedure is a good way to not have to worry about such.

It would be nice if schools would do that -- have the courage to do that. But I'm not surprised that this one didn't.

Did you actually read the story?

I hadn't, because it was behind a pay wall. But I have since, and I really have to wonder about the handbook. Did the NYT see it? Because the story is written as if it might not have done so. And did anybody go back farther than last year's handbook?

I'd question whether calculations of those at the top of a class have always been based on a regular grade-point curve, because, if so, how did a counselor make such a mistake as to use a totally wrong basis for the honors? Also, I believe most schools these days do, in fact, use the QPA way of calculating.

And if I were those white parents, I would've kept my mouth shut, because, whatever the history of calculating, clearly those two black girls did better than the white kids. I'd have been embarrassed to make such a claim to top honors -- unless I knew my kid really was, actually, on top.

The story highlighted the helicopter parenting that often accompanies high achievers. One of the (white) dads said he'd been keeping track of the kid's GPA since seventh grade. How about you go out and enjoy a beer with a couple guys while watching Mississippi State get steamrolled by Alabama? I understand being proud of your kid, but I doubt s/he enjoyed the weekly GPA updates.

Add in the element of race in a state that has a history of overtly discriminating against black people, and you get this toxic stew.

4.0 GPAs used to be 4.0 GPAs, until AP credits and weighted points threw everything all to hell.

One of my best friends in high school finished third in our graduating class of 396. He would have been salutatorian except for the fact that (A) there were no weighted GPAs (and only one AP class then) and (B) our honors history teacher (whom the salutatorian ducked) inadvertently dinged him because he did not believe in issuing any grade higher than 99-plus.

Salutatorian went off to the Citadel as a football walk-on and I never heard what happened to him. Mr. Third Place went to Georgetown and I never heard what happened to him until a couple of years ago, when it turned out he had risen to become some mid-level director at the Trump Justice Department in charge of making sure the immigration courts screwed over brown people. After that I didn’t feel bad for Mr. Third Place anymore.
