Clarion-Ledger reporter Lee Sanderlin finished last in his fantasy football league. As punishment, he is having to spend 24 hours in a Waffle House. He can shave one hour off the total for every waffle he eats.
He's live tweeting the whole thing and hilarity is ensuing. He's just about to start Hour 7 and has put down six waffles so far.

I feel like he went wrong from the jump involving syrup and butter. This ain’t a pleasure cruise. Eat them plain, ask for the biggest glass of ice-free water they’ll give you (for dunking) and pace yourself.

Starting at 4 p.m. was also an odd choice. I'd think you'd start early in the morning and then you could be out of there by midnight at the latest. Unless the idea was to go for a mostly off-peak time to be able to explain to the staff what the deal is and make the loitering more tolerable.

Either way, I think most people are capping out around 8-10 waffles. Pacing yourself is the key -- try to eat about one waffle an hour; just enough to stay in a rhythm, not so slow that everything settles -- but you might as well enjoy them while you're doing it.

Dude made it after 15 hours and nine waffles. Starting to get some press for this titanic human accomplishment.

Restaurants that also make you down potatoes and bread are fucking bullshit. That shit fills fast!

I’m guessing they’ve raised the price this year. But if not, $16 a pound for quality boneless steak isn’t too far above the norm lately, and that’s not counting the shrimp, salad and roll. A contrarian strategy could be just to accept that you are paying up, enjoy the sides and a few bites of steak at your leisure and then take the rest home.

As usual with anything significant, it was immortalized by The Simpsons:

I not only ate at the Big Texan while wandering through Amarillo, I stayed in their "bunkhouse" - the whole place is kitschy, but fun - great gift shop too if you're on a Route 66 roadie. No, didn't even try the steak challenge. Having to eat in the middle of the dining room on a raised stage after being weighed in? I barely finished the 20 oz I ordered.
