There have been rumors for a while that DeCastro was injured and might retire. The Steelers fed that particular fire by bringing in Trai Turner for a visit, which wouldn't have made much sense unless somebody on the current roster was a question mark. The assumption seems to be that they did expect DeCastro to be ready to go this season. If not, cutting Steven Nelson to make cap room made no sense at all.

Now, in addition to the hole at corner created by the losses of Nelson and Mike Hilton and the lack of any depth at outside linebacker, the offensive line looks even worse. They had already lost Alejandro Villanueva to free agency and Maurkice Pouncey to retirement. Those two and DeCastro looked like shells of their former selves in 2020, but the potential replacements are far from promising. The only real positive is now perhaps they can bring in some decent free agent help at one of those positions.

Nobody actually expected the NFL to give one of its teams a penalty with some real teeth for this, did they?
