Yup. They are taught in church to spread the word, but they translate spread into shove it down everyone else's throat. I certainly don't think it is all of them or even a majority, but it is enough to be really fucking annoying.

This is completely true and completely what is wrong with too many Christians. There are several commandments that Jesus gave: To love each other, forgive when someone hurts you, to focus on your own issues before worrying about other’s issues and to lift up your neighbors even if society tells you otherwise. Those rules are things they tell themselves in Church and in their little bubbles to make themselves feel more godly. They don’t actually follow it and then wonder why more and more young people want nothing to do with the church.

The other flaw in their little I need to convince people to stop giving into the gay temptations is it’s all sin that hurts our relationship with God. But they don’t line up at military funerals with signs proclaiming God hates your Sunday tailgate.

Christianity has come full circle: Pharisees rise to power, make Judaism hyper legalistic and oppressive (according to Christian tradition. Not saying this is true for Judaism), Jesus comes down to return Judaism to its relationship with his father, rebuffs the Pharisees, Christianity burgeons as small gatherings hiding from persecution by Romans and others, Christianity is legitimized, it is legalized, leaders rise up to enforce the Christian law, Christianity becomes the Pharisees, Christianity becomes oppressive.

When Christians point out that God is going to punish America for LGBTQ rights, I like to counter by asking them why a supposedly pro-life God would get so mad at two guys or two women marrying each other that he would kill babies, fetuses, children and pregnant women.

    Usually there isn’t a response.

Started a thread on that one, I figured that was worth its own. Curious if other players, in any of the major sports, step forward now.

It’s a step in the right direction.

Every NFL roster probably has 3-5 players right now that could take the same step Nassib did.

And I’m not bitching at them, but that just shows how much of the NFL he could be representing.

To be perfectly frank, it would take an athlete in any sport on the level of Messi, LeBron, Osaka or Brady to move the needle. More steps will have to be made first.

The thing about a lot of religions is, at their best they instill people with a sense of ethics and give them a reason to think beyond their interests. At their worst, they almost invariably devolve into a means of policing who's having sex with whom and who gets to decide who is OK with that. I firmly believe that's the core of the abortion debate. Demanding a woman carry an unplanned pregnancy to term is simply something we do because we can't put them in stocks in the town square like Hester Prynne anymore.

Almost all of the references to homosexuality in the Bible refer to pederasty or unequal relationships between masters and slaves. The concept of two persons in a co-equal same-sex relationship was largely foreign to anyone who would have written or lived in Biblical times, but then again a man and a woman in a co-equal relationship was nearly as foreign.

And as much as we bash Christians specifically (and they deserve it), other religions are even more clear about it. If I recall correctly, there is a passage in the Quran to the effect of "when a man mounts another man, the very throne of God shakes."

Going back to Christianity, it's actually rather surprising how much of the Levitical law is kind of simple get-along stuff whether it's thousands of Israelites walking across the desert or a home owner's association. Don't steal your neighbor's stuff. This is what you do if someone's got a skin disease. This is what happens if your animals stampede someone's kid. In any group, whether it's a church or a small town, the sex stuff has the potential to blow up biggest, so a lot of people take it upon themselves to enforce it either because of ignorance (I've encountered numerous well-meaning conservative Christians who've said something to the effect of, 'I just can't understand why someone would want to have sex with a man when there's women) or pruriance, which we as Americans are very good at because of our centuries of puritanical approaches to the topic.

It’s quite interesting to debate anti-gay marriage and anti-abortionists when their own philosophies crash into each other.

Conservative: God is going to punish America for gay marriage!

Me: Punish America? Sounds nasty. How’s he going to do that?

Conservative: Just like in Sodom and Gomorrah. Homosexuality is an abomination.

Me: So God’s going to get angry at our country allowing two guys or two gals to marry each other, and he’s going to kill people?

    Conservative: Read your Bible.

Me: OK, so God’s going to kill people. That would include babies and pregnant women. I thought your God is supposed to be pro-life?

    Conservative: Uhhhh

Me: So God is going to be so mad at Adam and Steve for fucking each other, he’s going to kill not only them, but also pregnant Jessica, and entire maternity wards?

    Yep.

The only truly fair way to solve ‘the problem’ of transgendered humans in sporting competitions, in fact for all competitions, from the 100M dash to the Academy Awards for acting, is to no longer differentiate anything by sex or gender. Open competition. If Meryl Streep did a better job of acting one year than Daniel Day Lewis, she wins the Best Acting Oscar. No longer will actor be limited to roles on the basis of sex or gender or any attribute other than talent. Maybe Susan Sarandon deserves the opportunity to play Shylock, just like Daniel Kaluuya should be considered to play Marie Currie. Let it work for sports too. The fastest get to run, the best hitters and pitchers get to play baseball and softball. Water polo, diving, tennis, basketball. Gender is a social construct and there are multiple genders, not just the 2 we had always thought were fixed at birth.
