Can't find the damned travel thread again, so ... Boston?

Probably going to Boston for fall break with the family. Just want my high school junior to get a whiff of Harvard.

Went a few summers ago with my brother for a Fenway run and took the ballpark tour several hours before game time. Was cool to get up to the Monster seats and (briefly) on the field.

Now that our marathon is all in the books, I'm allowing myself to finish up plans. Got tickets for a Barenaked Ladies/Gin Blossoms show at the Leader Bank Pavilion and Wicked at the Boston Opera House.

That and the "Boob Grab" are kind of the twin towers of the Don/Rem-Dawg oeuvre. On a related note, it's going to take a lot of self-restraint to just randomly shout "XANDAH BOGAHHTS!" at points throughout the game.

Since the BnL thing is on Sunday (and it might be the only time the JFK library is open), I'm probably going to pass on a second Sox game, but I may also avail myself of a good soccer bar for the Euro 2020 final if anyone has any recommendations.

You’ll find a bunch of them. Depending on where you stay I’ve got two recommendations: Phoenix Landing in Cambridge and the Banshee in Dorchester. Both were big football bars pre-COVID, but you might wanna check in with them beforehand. Both are a relatively short walk from the Red Line.

Went to Fenway earlier this week. They are not all electronic ticketing. They’re also now selling singles. They haven’t been selling out. I think people are still skittish post-COVID. I got an upper bleacher seat for $33, but that’s about what I paid for single-game standing room at Wrigley a couple years ago.

Reviving this thread, maybe @Michael_ Gee or another Bostonian can help ... I'm an IHG rewards whore (Holiday Inns, etc.) and looking at a couple hotel options for a fall break family trip. We're going to do a couple college visits and the touristy stuff.

Not planning on a car, instead we'll take public transportation. On my last trip a couple years ago, a long weekend with my brother, we stayed out in East Cambridge next to the Lechmere T station and boarded that every day to get around. Worked great. That's an option for this trip, but there's also a cheaper hotel in Woburn, near a commuter rail line. But would that be a pain to tackle every day? I just don't have enough of a feel for the area and what's too far out.

Lechmere is shut down now as they're working on extending the Green Line, and I don't think that ends until December. You can do shuttle buses to North Station or it's about a 20-minute walk to the Red Line.

Commuter rail service is down from pre-pandemic but they've made it more sustainable, with semi-consistent headways throughout the day as opposed to being rush hour-focused. Be careful which stop you stay near. Mishawum is closed because of the pandemic. Not sure where your hotel would be.

Lowell Line | Commuter Rail | MBTA

Note: Commuter rail fares add up quickly, although you can get a Saturday/Sunday pass for $10. That is not valid for the subway.

There is a Holiday Inn Express about a 10-minute walk from the Andrew stop on the Red Line, but the area is rough around the edges by Boston standards. I wouldn't say unsafe, just not glitteringly nice.

More than you wanted to know, I'm sure.

Don't know what your price point is, but when we were in Boston a few years ago, we stayed near Copley Square and near the green and orange lines. It was perfect.

Just checked through Google. An IHG place called the Beacon Inn in Brookline just caught my eye. As for location it is right on the Green Line C line in a reasonably ritzy part of town. It was also as of 9 a.m. offering way low rates, $99 a night. As they say, caveat emptor, but you might want to check it out.

Piggybacking on some other remarks - commuter rail means you'll have to transfer, and likely pay 2x the fee. Depending on how long your stay is, it's probably just worth it to upgrade to a nicer hotel that's within walking distance of the T, because the "savings" will be eaten by the train anyway. The T has also spurred development in some areas of the city, and some of the stops have plenty of stuff right by them. (This does NOT hold for all stops - some of the red and green line stops, you don't want to be there past 9 p.m. Or, uh, even 5 p.m.)
