The Quincy (Ill.) Herald-Whig is looking for an experienced journalist to oversee our goal of providing top-level coverage of the area’s prep and college programs on all digital and print platforms.

THE SPORTS EDITOR oversees coverage of 26 high schools, four colleges, a Prospect League team and other community events. The ideal candidate will be able to build a sports section that engages the reader and coordinate a freelance staff to tell the stories that make this sports savvy area unique.

Do you know how to develop stories that go beyond the game? Then we want to talk to you.

The Herald-Whig is a six-day newspaper that is part of a growing company dedicated to the communities it serves. Quincy is a beautiful, affordable community of 40,000 on the banks of the Mississippi River in West-Central Illinois. Our coverage area consists of West-Central Illinois and Northeast Missouri.

Quincy is a two-hour drive from Peoria and Springfield in Illinois, St. Louis and Columbia in Missouri, and Iowa City, Iowa.

The Herald-Whig offers a comprehensive employee benefits package.

The Herald-Whig is an equal opportunity employer.

If you think you have what it takes to be our next sports editor, please send a resume, samples of your work and a letter outlining how you would approach the job to:

Didn't they lose both their SE and longtime, very well-respected senior sports writer at about the same time, going from a 2-person sports staff to no sports staff?

Yeah, there's nothing left there. The "coordinate a freelance staff" line seems to indicate you're on your own here.

The most recent SE left the business, oh, a month or two ago. IIRC, his wife's career took precedence and they relocated to the Kansas City area.

The very well-respected senior sports writer is Matt Schuckman. Matt is an outstanding writer. Lately, he's been doing all the reporting.

It's worth noting the Herald-Whig was sold earlier this year by Quincy Media, Inc. to Harrison, Ark.-based Phillips Media.

You might be thinking of the Kirksville (Mo.) Daily Express, which now publishes twice a week. :)

Ha - worked a hastily arranged summer internship at the Kirksville Daily Distress about a million years ago.

Was the longest summer of my life.

And I agree on Schuckman. Great person whose departure will be felt for a long time there.

Just to clear up any confusion I might have brought to the table: Matt's still there.

Wow! Obviously I was unaware. Huge loss! Makes the new SE's job a heck of a lot more difficult.

The day after this ran, the entire section was AP. There was some agate, including moves made by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
BurnsWhenIPee is dead-on with the post directly above.
