Lol. If there was only this thing called the internet. People don’t watch sports like they used to.

I hear that Ken Griffey Jr was pretty good in Seattle, I wonder if New Yorkers had ever heard of him.

The games end after midnight in the East. Tomorrow, it is yesterday's news.
I was hoping today was the day you stopped being a dumbass. I was wrong.

Die hards who do fantasy and follow these things know. Casual fan who isn’t watching a Tuesday night game that starts at 10:30pm will not. Just because they should know doesn’t mean they do. Also MLB sucks at marketing players. They might only be better than the NHL.

Check out Griffey's stats between 1990 and 1999. Close to as good a decade in the post-1980 era as there has ever been. He was clearly the position best player in MLB. In nine seasons (he was hurt for half of 95) he won ONE MVP. Finished second once, fourth two other times. You can't tell me that playing on the West Coast at night did not hurt him with East Coast voters, who, yes, did not know how good he truly was because he played 100 games a year in the Pacific Time Zone.

Should have won at least once or twice in 93, 94, 96 and 98 on his hitting stats alone, never mind simply spectacular defense in one of the hardest positions on the field.

But yeah, to New Yorkers he sure wasn't as good as Donnie Baseball!

He was amazing, so I’m curious which year he got jobbed?

And an east coast bias was a hell of a lot more relevant before we had access to what we have now. Also, did Griffey not lead vote getters in all star voting those years?

The claim by Chris Long that someone on his Facebook feed only found out how good Ohtani was after playing the Yankees is either a lie or someone who does not follow baseball at all.

The 4 years you mention the one who may have been jobbed was AROD in 96.

All-star votes by fans are quite different than MVP votes by writers.

Maybe the East Coast bias is less now than when Griffey played. But when you say "I hear that Ken Griffey Jr was pretty good in Seattle, I wonder if New Yorkers had ever heard of him" you're not dealing with today. You're dealing with the pre-Internet era, when playing in a small market on the West Coast definitely impacted Griffey's exposure and by extension, robbed him of at least one MVP award.

You may disagree. No big deal. We can both agree that Juan Gonzales and his 3.8 WAR was a joke as the 1996 MVP instead of ARod or Junior; so probably was his 98 award with a 4.9.

I saw plenty of Griffey live in the Kingdome and Safeco. The fan vote means he was the most popular player in the game, or at least up there. I also have no doubt back then there was a bias, it would have been impossible not to have one living on the East Coast but I think it can be a lazy crutch used buy scorned fanboys.

The original FB post was made by a retired baseball writer. He had a lengthy career and worked all over the country, including NY and for The National. He doesn't participate on FB very often, but he shows up when he has a point to make. He is highly respected and knows his shit.

He presented all of the evidence of Ohtani's prowess to this point. That prompted a few dozen comments. That's where the NYers who follow him chimed in, admitting they didn't know much about him until this week. They are baseball fans and followers, otherwise they wouldn't be on the friend's FB feed. I mentioned the East Coast bias. The original poster said yes, absolutely, and I know because I worked in NY for 7 years.
